Chia seeds have become a social media favorite, showing up in TikTok recipes for puddings, smoothies, and overnight oats. Short videos often praise the tiny seeds for helping with weight loss and improving nutrition.
Still, a new warning from Norway-based supplement company NYO3 highlights a serious issue many users may not know about — chia seeds can become dangerous when eaten the wrong way.
Known for their appearance in the iconic Chia Pet, chia seeds may be small, but they contain a large amount of nutrients. According to the Mayo Clinic, a serving of about 2.5 tablespoons includes 140 calories, 5 grams of protein, 10 grams of fiber, 12 grams of carbohydrates, and 9 grams of fat. Around 8 grams come from omega-3 fatty acids, which support heart health.
Many people add chia seeds to their diets because the fiber content slows digestion and helps create a feeling of fullness. Studies also connect chia seeds to a lower risk of diabetes, heart disease, and colorectal cancer. Yet preparation matters just as much as nutrition.
Why Dry Chia Seeds Can Become Dangerous

Freepik | devmaryna | NYO3 warns that insufficiently soaked chia seeds pose a major risk to digestive health.
Chia seeds absorb liquid extremely fast and can expand to at least 12 times their original weight. That expansion should happen before consumption, not after. NYO3 warned that eating dry chia seeds, or seeds soaked for only a few minutes, may create serious digestive problems once the seeds absorb liquid inside the stomach or intestines.
The company explained that the swollen seeds can form a dense, concrete-like mass capable of causing blockages. In severe situations, medical treatment or surgery may become necessary. Some TikTok videos reportedly show creators consuming chia mixtures before the seeds fully expand, increasing potential health risks.
Experts recommend soaking chia seeds thoroughly for at least 15 minutes, though longer soaking times may work better. Smoothies, chia puddings, and overnight oats remain safer choices because they allow the seeds to absorb enough liquid before eating.
Anyone experiencing chest pain, difficulty swallowing, or the sensation of food becoming stuck in the throat after eating chia seeds should seek immediate medical care. While chia seeds offer strong nutritional value, safe preparation plays a major role in preventing avoidable health complications.
